Art Talks & Demonstrations

Animania Festival Weekend 2008 will be featuring a new stage just for talks related specifically to the artforms of Japanese fan culture - the Doujin Stage!

Doujinshi, or "amateur work" by fans, is an important aspect of anime and manga culture.

This stage will be home to a range of talks, screenings and demonstrations including Cosplay, Anime Music Videos (AMVs), Asian Ball Jointed Dolls and more! Make sure to check this space for updates!


ART PANELS

DIGITAL & TRADITIONAL ILLUSTRATION: FROM CONCEPT TO WORK OF ART
You've heard of the X-Seven artist studio, you may even have one of their prints hanging on your bedroom wall! Now here's your chance to see one of their talented artists in action. Watch and learn how concepts are put to paper or screen in this practical talk on digital and traditional illustration.

TRANSLATING IDEAS TO PANELS: CREATION OF A WEBCOMIC
Layout, storyboarding, background, character development, inking, colouring … oh my! Navigate the world of webcomics in this informative tutorial with Loren Morris, creator of online webcomic, Hunting Party. This will be a great opportunity to learn some hints and tips on the processes behind building a webcomic and get inspired to create your own!

COPICS: AN ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO AN ESSENTIAL TOOL
Copic markers come in a wide range of colours which can be blended to create new shades. A tool of choice for many manga artists, this tutorial will be an opportunity to learn from one of the best! Aya will take you through the use of copics, as well as some tips, tricks and colouring techniques in this must-see demonstration! Don't miss it!!

ASIAN BALL JOINTED DOLLS (ABJD): AN INTRODUCTION

Renowned member of the Australian doll community, Loki, will provide an introduction to the niche hobby of Asian Ball Jointed Dolls. Still coming into its own in Australia, Asian Ball Jointed Dolls are proving to be a unique and beautiful artform. Loki will touch on many points of interest to novices as well as current doll owners. Don't miss out on this enlightening talk!




LIVE FACE-UP TUTORIAL

Our guest face-up artists will be Sydney's own experienced Mk13 of Moonteahouse Aesthetics, and Melbourne's talented Healdria of Papi Esthetics. Learn about the different types of face-up techniques as well as tips and tricks of the trade - using pastels as well as airbrushing!!

The face-up demonstrations promise to be comprehensive and will include Q&A sessions. More details to come soon!



INTRODUCTION TO DOLL PHOTOGRAPHY

Curious about what goes on behind the camera lens or interested in taking better pictures that will finally do your dolls justice? This is a great opportunity to learn from mskat, an internationally renowned photographer. Visit mskat's Flickr to take a look at her amazing and adorable pictures of her tinies. Also, coming all the way from Adelaide is the multi-talented needoll who will be providing some pointers and tips to better your doll photo-taking skills. All Cosplayers have to eventually use a wig, buy fabric, and make their own accessories. Two of the most experienced Cosplayers in Australia, Melanie and Asham, will share their secrets about styling amazing wigs, picking the right fabric for a costume, and how to make realistic accessories. You will come out of this panel as a better Cosplayer!

COSPLAY GROUPS AND SKITS

Having trouble organising Cosplay groups and making entertaining skits? This panel will give essential advice for successful organisation of a Cosplay group, tips to organise and write entertaining skits and pre-record them. The love and peace movement are experts in these areas, and will share their knowledge and personal experiences. No boring bits!

PROPS AND ARMOURS

Are you ready for a Cosplay challenge? Come and see K and Aly telling you about advance Cosplay techniques. They will teach you everything they know about making props and armours, even how to transport them from conventions to conventions. This is a must see panel if you intend to tackle advance cosplaying or the WCS competition.

Q/A SESSION WCS 2008 ROUND 4

After the Saturday WCS performances, come see up close the WCS 2008 Round 4 contestants! Judges will be asking some questions before making their final decision. The public will also be able to ask questions about the contestants’ costumes, skits or personal experiences in preparing for the WCS competition. If you are thinking of entering the WCS competition in 2009, this will be a valuable panel.

COSPLAY HISTORY AND COSPLAY @ CONVENTIONS

A bit of history of Cosplay around the world, a bit of history of Cosplay around Australia, a few useless facts that everybody loves to hear, and where else can you Cosplay in Australia and around the world?!?!?! You are not a cosplayer until you have experience it all! Come see this panel and you shall experience it all!

WORLD COSPLAY SUMMIT (WCS) 2009

Australia’s preselection for WCS 2009 is almost over. What next? Australia’s preselection for WCS 2010!!! Don’t miss this panel if you want to enter next year. We will have exclusive footage from Japan WCS2008, advice for cosplayers entering the preselection, and you will have the privilege to ask questions to one of the WCS organisers, Akiko Okubo, who flew to Australia from Japan for the Australian preselection.

After the WCS finals performances, come see up close the WCS 2008 finalists! Judges will be asking some questions before making their final decision.
